With public transport you go to Piraeus where the guide takes you to the lovely neighborhood of Kastella. During the walk in this area, which is built against a hill, you have plenty of beautiful views of the sea. In Kastella with its narrow streets and pots with plants at the front doors, you get the feeling you are on a Greek island. From the top, where the church Profitis Illias stands, you have a beautiful view over the surrounding area.
You descend to Mikrolimano, the old fishing port where nowadays there are a lot of cafe’s and fishing restaurants. Here we will have a break end you will be treated with something refreshing.
By tram you go to the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center, a gem of modern architecture.
Summer 2016 it opened its doors and it has quickly become one of the new highlights of Athens.
The modern building, surrounded by a large park, houses the national library and national opera house.
In the park, which is very popular by the locals, nice sitting areas under old olive trees invite you to sit down and dream away. There is also a labyrinth, a canal and fountains that invite you to walk through on a hot summer day.
The roof of the Stavros Niarchos center is overgrown and part of the park. From the lighthouse, as the glass tower on top of the roof is called, you have a beautiful view over the sea.
You can choose to end the excursion with a lunch at the Waterfront.
